The Col. John Ashe House on South Battery (on the right) is certainly one of the more eye-catching houses in Charleston. Built c. 1782, the distinctive cupola was used to cool the house, helping circulate air through the house. It was also used as a lighthouse for a time, helping guide ships into Charleston harbor.
