The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture (formerly known as the Avery Normal Institute), located on Bull Street, is now part of the College of Charleston. From 1865 (during the time of slavery) through 1954, it was used to train its students for professional careers and leadership roles. It now serves to preserve the legacy of the Avery Normal Institute and educate the community on the history and culture of African Americans in Charleston, the South Carolina Lowcountry, and South Carolina at large.
Besides an amazing history, check out the bottle tree in the front yard — which is used to trap the evil spirits that might come calling.
