Glimpses of Charleston

A local's eye view

Sunrise Along The High Battery

Early morning shadows being cast along the High Battery in Charleston, SC

There are few places, if any, in Charleston that are much more beautiful to watch a sunrise than along the High Battery. Have you watched the sun rise from there?

Ashley River Sunset

The setting sun reflected in the Ashley River, during an usually low tide, in Charleston

During an unusually low tide (notice the long stretch of “beach” along the Low Battery wall), the sun put on a show as it was going down beyond the Ashley River.

Moon Over Charleston

Feeling a Bit Moorish in Charleston

Moorish architecture in Charleston, SC

The building on the left was built as a bank in 1854 on East Bay Street, in the Moorish Revival Style referred to its architect as “Saracenic.”  Years later, the building housed a well known Charleston restaurant — Saracen.

Downtown Sunset

The glow created along Broad Street as the sun went down last night was spectacular.

Winter Flowers

A very patriotic flower basket hanging on a beautiful Charleston gate.

Despite the recent chilly weather, there are flowers blooming all over Charleston. This very patriotic gate basket can be found on Meeting Street.

Table of Goodies

A display of Sweetgrass creations waiting to be bought in Charleston, SC

A table like this can only be found in a few places in downtown Charleston. It’s full of wonderful sweet grass creations — a Lowcountry art form brought over from Africa by enslaved Africans. This table can be found on Meeting Street, across from the Federal Courthouse. The wall behind the table is part of St. Michael’s Church graveyard.

Good Morning Sunshine

General William Moultrie greeting the rising sun at White Point Garden in Charleston, SC

White Point Garden is a glorious place to be at almost any time of the day. When the first rays of sun hit the Charleston peninsula, the Garden starts to light up. One of the first parts of the park that sees the sun is this statue of General William Moultrie (Revolutionary War hero) and these cannons.

Sunburst Sunset

Blooming!

An Eastern Redbud blossoming in the winter in Charleston, SC

Despite the extreme cold that Charleston has been experiencing, there has been some pretty spring-like activity going on. All over town the Eastern Redbud trees (also known as Cercis canadensis) have been bursting into bloom.

Any spring-like activity where you are?

Ask a Local

What’s the deal with the City Market? Were slaves sold there or not?

asks John H., from Seattle, Washington… The City Market is what was called the “Slaves’ Market,” not the “Slaves Market.”  That apostrophe makes all the difference in the world. While a shocking number of humans were sold into slavery in Charleston (a very dark period in the City’s history), they were not sold at what […]
