Glimpses of Charleston

A local's eye view

Marina Sunrise

The sun coming up as seen from the Marina Variety Store Restaurant, home of the best breakfast in Charleston.

C’mon In

For hundreds of years, Charleston has embraced the beauty of wrought and cast ironwork. Spectacular gates abound around the city. This gate, with elegant herons or egrets, welcomes locals and visitors alike to Waterfront Park.

Charleston Layers

With all the beauty that can be found in Charleston, it can come in layers. Sometimes just peeking through the gate is not the thing to do!

Chilly Blossoms

It may be cold in Charleston (it’s been going down into the teens at night), but that’s not stopping some of the flowering trees from starting to show off. All around town there are pinkish blooms starting to show — theses are glowing a bit in the setting sun,

Stormy Sunset

With a storm rolling in, sunset along the Ashley River can be really striking.

Fountain of Justice

The Hollings Judicial Center at the Federal court complex in Charleston fronts on Meeting Street (and makes up one of the Four Corners of Law). The fountain is a calming element surrounded by conflict.

Charleston Single House

The Charleston single house comes in many sizes, from enormous mansions to the small and skinny. The one thing they have in common is that they are all just one room wide (hence the name). This one can be found on Meeting Street, just below St. Michael’s Church.

1 Meeting Street

This 11,800 square foot eight bedroom, eight bath house, which is currently for sale, has one of the most prestigious addresses in Charleston. Located on the corner of Meeting Street and South Battery, it has spectacular views of White Point Garden and across to the Ashley River.

The Fleet

Charleston has always been home to a huge variety of boats and ships. There are always plenty of types of water craft to look at — from multi-masted sailing ships, to enormous container ships, to pleasure boats… and even the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier.

Line-Up

Just about every block in Charleston has something noteworthy, interesting or attractive to see. This row of houses on Tradd Street captures the beauty and details of life in Charleston.

Ask a Local

What’s the deal with the City Market? Were slaves sold there or not?

asks John H., from Seattle, Washington… The City Market is what was called the “Slaves’ Market,” not the “Slaves Market.”  That apostrophe makes all the difference in the world. While a shocking number of humans were sold into slavery in Charleston (a very dark period in the City’s history), they were not sold at what […]
