Glimpses of Charleston

A local's eye view

Melton Peter Demetre (aka Sunrise) Park

A truly hidden gem in the City of Charleston park system is Melton Peter Demetre Park (more familiarly known as Sunrise Park).

Located on James Island, about 7 miles from down Charleston, it’s perfectly situated for watching the sun come up (or go down) and for views of the harbor, peninsula or the Ravenel (Cooper River) Bridge — for which it has a dead-on view.

IMG_20141023_175110The park is is only about 4 acres in size, but has a 190 foot fishing pier connected to a 40 foot floating dock, two small sandy beaches, marshes, a covered picnic area, and a small pond, along with enough grass to romp on.

It’s worth the drive — there are no better views in Charleston.

A permit is required for an event at any City park. You can find all the relevant information here https://www.charleston-sc.gov/index.aspx?nid=362

What’s the deal with the City Market? Were slaves sold there or not?

asks John H., from Seattle, Washington… The City Market is what was called the “Slaves’ Market,” not the “Slaves Market.”  That apostrophe makes all the difference in the world. While a shocking number of humans were sold into slavery in Charleston (a very dark period in the City’s history), they were not sold at what […]
