Glimpses of Charleston

A local's eye view

A Very Pink House

Legend has it that the owner of this house picked this color scheme because it reminded him of healthy teeth and gums. Not surprisingly, he was a dentist.

Legend has it that the owner of this house on East Battery Street picked this color scheme because it reminded him of healthy teeth and gums. Not surprisingly, he was a dentist. No longer a private home, you can stay there as it is now a B&B (The Palmer Home).

Arrr! Tour With A Pirate

Of all the tours in Charleston, SC, perhaps the most entertaining to see coming down the street is the pirate tour -- lead by a pirate.

Of all the tours in Charleston (ghost, history, carriage, boat, culinary, etc.), perhaps the most entertaining to see coming down the street is the pirate tour — lead by a pirate. Normally, he is accompanied by a parrot…must have been its day off.

Blooming Gateposts

It shouldn't be surprising that even the gateposts in Charleston, SC , burst with flowers.

Even the gateposts in Charleston burst into bloom! And check out the beautiful flowering camellia as well.

Evening Glow

The setting sun provides a wonderful glow on a beautiful row of Charleston, SC houses.

Sun and Steeple

As the sun drops in the Charleston sky, it creates wonderful silhouettes.

Oh What A Beautiful Morning

Charleston Library Society

The thrid oldest subscription library in the US, the Charleston Library Society holds a prominent place on King Street in Charleston, SC

The Charleston Library Society, founded in 1748,  is the third oldest subscription library in the United States (after only the Library Company of Philadelphia (founded 1731 by Benjamin Franklin) and the Redwood Library and Athenaeum of Newport, Rhode Island (1747). It has been at its current location at 164 King Street since 1914.

Despite the rather wintry feel to this photo, it was taken while the temperature was about 65 degrees!

Temporary Office

Free Wi-Fi in Waterfront Park helps make for a beautiful temporary office in Charleston, SC

With the internet service down this morning (thanks Comcast!), Glimpses needed to find some temporary office space. The free Wi-Fi in Waterfront Park makes this a pretty great place to be working on a beautiful morning.

Hey! Look What I Found!

This small cannon was found under a house on Tradd Street in Charleston, SC

This cannon was found under the house at the corner of Tradd and Greenhill Streets after it was last sold. It’s the real deal, as the owners had it authenticated. While I’m not sure how old it is, it must just have been stored there as the house was built in 1894. Charleston is full of interesting things no matter where you look!

What’s the deal with the City Market? Were slaves sold there or not?

asks John H., from Seattle, Washington… The City Market is what was called the “Slaves’ Market,” not the “Slaves Market.”  That apostrophe makes all the difference in the world. While a shocking number of humans were sold into slavery in Charleston (a very dark period in the City’s history), they were not sold at what […]
