Layers of Charleston

A beautiful window box and wall on Atlantic Street. The black disk above the window is the end of an earthquake rod or bolt — which is used to hold the house together in case of an earthquake or hurricane.

Ashe House

The Col. John Ashe House on South Battery (on the right) is certainly one of the more eye-catching houses in Charleston. Built c. 1782, the distinctive cupola was used to cool the house, helping circulate air through the house. It was also used as a lighthouse for a time, helping guide ships into Charleston harbor.

Queen Anne

This beautiful Queen Anne style house on Legare Street was built around 1876, following the destruction of the original house on the site in the great fire of 1861.

A Bit of Latitude

Longitude Lane is one of the more picturesque alleys in Charleston. There is confusion over the origin of its name, as it is aligned along a line of latitude, not longitude. While there is no definitive explanation of the history of its name, you can find a pretty compelling one here.

Model Home

This beautiful house on Tradd Street was built c. 1765 by one of the main sub-contractors of St. Michael’s Church. He was so good at building that the interior woodwork in his house, was reproduced in the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts in Winston Salem, North Carolina, as a representative of a Charleston room.

Rutledge

This house on Rutledge Avenue, built in 1908, has an unusually large front yard — highlighted by a great palm tree.

On the Street

This cool streetscape is on Tradd Street. The building was once the stables for the Sword Gate House, which recently sold for $10 million and was once owned by Abraham Lincoln’s grandaughter.

South Battery

A row of antebellum (mid-1800’s) houses on South Battery. Beautiful.

Welcoming Entrance

This beautiful Charleston entrance can be found on Meeting Street across from South Carolina Society Hall — where generations of Charlestonians have learned to dance at “Cotillion.”
